Overwatering, caught early
Soggy soil and limp segments, but a firm base, means overwatering before rot has set in.
Diagnosis
Overwatering, caught early
What's happening
Christmas cactus likes to dry out between waterings. When the mix stays wet too long, the roots can't take up oxygen and start to falter, so the segments lose firmness and go soft even though they're surrounded by water. Caught now, the roots are still saveable.
How to fix it
Stop watering immediately and let the soil dry out well — at least the top half of the pot. Move it somewhere with good airflow so the mix dries faster, and make sure the pot is actually draining and not sitting in a full saucer. Going forward, only water once the top inch or two feels dry, and water more sparingly in winter. A coarse, airy mix will help the roots breathe.
What fixes it
- A soil moisture meter — A moisture meter removes the guesswork — only water when it reads dry an inch or two down.
If that doesn't fix it
This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
