Too much direct sun
Yellowing, washed-out leaves on a brightly lit stalk point to too much direct sun.
Diagnosis
Too much direct sun
What's happening
Lucky bamboo grows under the dappled shade of larger plants in the wild and isn't built for harsh, direct rays. Strong sun through a window bleaches the leaves to a pale yellow and can scorch them, usually worst on the side facing the glass.
How to fix it
Move the plant back from the window to a spot with bright but indirect light, or filter the sun with a sheer curtain. An interior shelf or a north-facing sill suits it well. The already-yellowed leaves won't green back up, so trim badly affected ones, but new growth should come in a healthy green once the light is gentler.
What fixes it
- A full-spectrum LED grow light — If your only bright spot is a harsh window, a soft grow light gives even light without scorching.
If that doesn't fix it
This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
