Bud blast from a sudden change
Buds that yellow, shrivel, and drop before opening are suffering bud blast, a stress reaction to a sudden change.
Diagnosis
Bud blast from a sudden change
What's happening
Forming buds are the most sensitive part of the plant, and they abort when conditions swing too fast. Common triggers are a sharp temperature change or cold draft, a big move from store to home, dry air, letting the bark dry out completely while in bud, or fumes from ripening fruit, cooking, or a heating vent nearby. Even a single shock can make the whole spike drop its buds.
How to fix it
Settle the plant in a stable spot away from heating and cooling vents, drafty doors, and the kitchen, and leave it there once buds appear — orchids dislike being moved while budding. Keep temperatures even, avoid letting the bark dry out fully during budding, and raise the humidity around it, since dry indoor air is a frequent culprit. With steady conditions the next round of buds should hold and open normally.
What fixes it
- A small room humidifier — A small humidifier nearby keeps humidity steady so developing buds don't dry out and drop.
If that doesn't fix it
This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
