Overwatering droop

A droop over soggy soil with a still-firm base means the roots are waterlogged but not yet rotted.

Diagnosis

Overwatering droop

What's happening

When Peace Lily roots sit in saturated soil they can't take up oxygen, so they stop drawing water properly — and the plant wilts even though the soil is wet. It looks just like thirst, which fools people into watering more and making it worse.

How to fix it

Stop watering and let the soil dry well down before the next drink. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and empty any saucer so it isn't standing in water. If it's in a heavy, water-retentive mix, repot into a lighter, airier blend. From now on, only water when the top inch feels dry — feel the soil, don't water on a schedule.

What fixes it

  • A soil moisture meter — A moisture meter ends the wet-vs-thirsty confusion — only water when it reads dry an inch down.

If that doesn't fix it

This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
