Dust buildup on the leaves
Big, glossy rubber-plant leaves are dust magnets, and a heavy coating dulls them and dims their light.
Diagnosis
Dust buildup on the leaves
What's happening
The broad, waxy leaves of a rubber plant collect household dust over time. A thick layer scatters incoming light and partly blocks the pores the leaf breathes through, so the plant looks lackluster and photosynthesizes less efficiently even though it's perfectly healthy.
How to fix it
Wipe each leaf gently on both sides with a soft, damp cloth, supporting the leaf with your other hand so you don't crease it. Do this every few weeks to keep the foliage glossy and the pores clear. Skip commercial leaf-shine sprays — they can clog the pores; plain water and a cloth do the job better.
What fixes it
- A long-spout watering can — A gentle shower or a damp cloth and clean water is all it takes to restore the shine.
If that doesn't fix it
This is general guidance based on common symptoms; individual plants vary.
