Not enough light

A Zebrina that stretches and loses its silver-and-purple stripes is almost always under-lit.

Diagnosis

Not enough light

What's happening

Tradescantia zebrina pours out its bold striping and rich purple undersides only in strong light. In a dim spot the leaves revert toward plain green, the silver bands fade, and the stems stretch toward the window with long gaps between increasingly small leaves — the classic leggy look.

How to fix it

Move it to the brightest indoor spot you have, including some gentle direct morning sun, which this plant tolerates and loves. Right up against an east or south window is ideal. If your space is genuinely dim, a full-spectrum grow light is the most reliable way to bring the stripes and purple back. Existing faded leaves usually won't recolor, but new growth in bright light comes in vivid and compact — and you can pinch the leggy tips to encourage it to bush out.
